In the Spotlight: Diana Ortiz

Interior designer Associate Diana Ortiz – or Lady Di, as she’s known around here – shares her thoughts on comfortable homes and her affection for Aerosmith.

Aerosmith? Let’s start there!

Actually, I listen to a wide variety of music, from oldies, heavy metal, R&B, and Latin to alternative and classic rock. This is all in part thanks to my dad, who listened to AC/DC and Aerosmith constantly when I was growing up.

Clearly, music means home to you. What else makes a house a home?

My top three include artwork on the walls, plants, and accessories. They all add a much-needed final layer to every project, and can be just as impactful as the rest of the furnishings in a room. Art and accessories can transform a room instantly. And their costs are nominal.

It sounds as though you’re all about the details.

It’s true I’m very particular. It’s one of the things I like most about working at Morgante Wilson. I can freely give my design input on all projects. And I love handling larger scale projects, which typically involve additional levels of detail.

What else do you like about working for MWA?

The people, for sure! I’ve been here since 2010, and enjoy the way each team member brings various levels of experience and work backgrounds, which helps all our projects become better rounded.

What kind of client do you most enjoy working with?

Someone who has an understanding of what they like and do not like. At the same time, they’re not afraid to take a few risks with alternate styles.

Aside from adventurous clients, what else inspires your work?

When I’m designing a fabric scheme for a client I like to find a statement fabric and build off that for color palettes. After thirteen years in the industry, coming up with new color combinations is still the part I enjoy the most about the design process.

How do you like to spend your time off from work?

I’ve always liked photography and recently took a class to obtain a greater understanding of how to take better-quality images with my DSLR camera. I also like to draw, and have been making a bigger effort to sketch in my free time. Traveling is another item at the top of my list. I hope to travel overseas this year, as I have yet to do that.

What’s one thing someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I have a vast knowledge of useless movie quotes, mostly from the 80’s. This makes me a great pick for trivia games!
